Chapter 7

“I’m going, Antoine.” I glare at the man before me, who for the first time in five years is making me so angry that I want to throw something.

“Lacey, think about it. You are the High Priestess. You can’t just go traipsing off to some man’s home. It’s not safe, and it doesn’t look right. Think about what people will say.”

“It’s not some man’s home. It is a dear old friend. And if we are saying that everyone should be helping each other, that it takes a village to raise a child, then shouldn’t I be the first one to be out there helping?”

Antoine snorts, “This is not you being altruistic, this is you wanting to get to know a man better. Say what you want to the public, but at least be honest with yourself and me.”

“You arrogant ass! It’s okay for you to want to be all nice and cozy with your sweetheart, even trying to get her into our entourage, but when I want to help a friend who desperately needs it, you pull this!” I pull back my hand, and before I know it, it is flying towards Antoine’s face. He grabs my wrist, “Priestess, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

I yank my arm away, turning my back to him. “I’m going. I need this. You can come chaperone me and help him or leave.” I don’t wait for a response as I walk away to find Caleb and his girls. Maybe Antoine is right that I want to get to know Caleb, see who he is now. But living in the Dragon Caves, I have become so far removed from the people and the day-to-day struggles they face. I need time–time to face my future and know what I want to do with my life.

I hear the dry grass crunch underfoot as someone approaches from behind. I refuse to turn, to be the first to speak.

“Lacey, I’m sorry. Five years of protecting you makes me a bit crazy. We can take the tents and set them up in the field near his house. If you stay in one, and the guards stay in the other, it will be alright. Let’s just hope he is willing to let us all stay.”

I nod my head at his words, not quite willing to accept his apology, or his compromise. For once I just want to be Lacey, the woman. Not the High Priestess, not someone everyone looks up to. I want to be free to go where I want, do what I want without people following me, watching me.

“I can’t live this life anymore. I am tired, and this trek has made me realize just how tired. Being put on a pedestal, held to a standard so high that I feel one day I will fall so far, I never will recover.” My voice is so soft I doubt Antoine can hear me. “I have nothing left to give.”

His hand grabs my wrist, gently pulling me to a stop and then tugging me into his arms.
